I cannot swim across the terrifying world ocean. But chanting the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, I am carried across across. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I give my whole self, gladly, to the feet of the One who holds the universe.

I cannot swim across the wide, rough sea of the world. Saying the Naam, I am carried safely to the other side.

The Naam carries you through life's hardest water.
The deeper layer

Life can feel like a huge sea, and the Name carries us across.

Balihaaree means I am devoted, a glad sacrifice, to the feet of the One. This is the "pause" line, the rahaa-o, the center of the shabad.

Bhavjal means the ocean of the world. Sometimes life can feel too big to cross alone. Then comes the hope: jap har har paar utaaree, holding the Name carries the singer across. Think of a ferry on a wide river. You don't have to swim. You just get on board, and you are carried safely to the other side.

A Question to Sit With

What has carried you through something that felt too big to face alone?
