Joy Itself, Always Near

ਮੰਗਲ ਰੂਪ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਜੀਵਨ ਧਨ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਅਨਦ ਘਨਾ ॥
mangal roop paraan jeevan Dhan simrat anad ghanaa.
God is the Embodiment of bliss, the Breath of Life and Wealth; remembering Him in meditation, I am blessed with absolute bliss.

vad samrath sadaa sad sangay gun rasnaa kavan bhanaa. ||1||
He is utterly All-powerful, with me forever and ever; what tongue can utter His Glorious Praises? ||1||

In plain words

The One is joy in person — my very breath, my life, my greatest wealth. Holding that One in mind, joy floods through me.

This One is endlessly strong and always, always by my side. How could one small tongue ever say enough good about that?

The One is joy itself, and always right beside you.
The deeper layer

The One is joy itself, always beside me, too great for any tongue to praise enough.

Mangal roop means the very shape of joy. Paraan jeevan Dhan names three things: breath, life and wealth. The One is all three.

Vad samrath means all-powerful. Sadaa sad sangay means "with me forever and ever." Guru Arjan, the fifth Guru, often comes back to this: the One is not far away. The One is the closest friend you have.

Then he asks, gun rasnaa kavan bhanaa: what tongue could say all that is good about the One? Think of trying to describe the ocean with one cup of water. Praise always falls short, and that is part of the wonder.

A Question to Sit With

Who or what feels so good that you can never quite find the words for it?
