Every Sense Turned Toward the One

ਨੈਣੀ ਬਿਰਹੁ ਦੇਖਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਰਸਨਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਨੀ ॥
nainee birahu daykhaa parabh su-aamee rasnaa naam vakhaanee.
With my eyes, I gaze lovingly upon God, my Lord and Master. I chant His Name with my tongue.
sarvanee keertan sun-o din raatee hirdai har har bhaanee. ||3||
With my ears, I listen to the Kirtan of His Praises, day and night. I love the Lord, Har, Har, with all my heart. ||3||

In plain words

With my eyes I look for the One everywhere; with my voice I speak the Name.

With my ears I listen to songs of praise, day and night; and in my heart, I simply love the One with everything I am.

You can turn every sense you have toward the One.
The deeper layer

Every part of the body turns toward the One here — eyes, tongue, ears and heart.

The eyes (nainee) look for the One with loving longing, which is birahu, the ache of missing someone. The tongue (rasnaa) speaks the Name. The ears (sarvanee) take in kirtan, songs of praise, day and night. And the heart (hirdai) simply loves.

Think of a sunflower that turns its whole face to the sun. Nothing is held back. And right at the center is deep listening, what Japji calls Suniai.

A Question to Sit With

If your eyes, ears, and voice all pointed at one thing, what would you want it to be?
