Verse 2 of 3

With Every Breath, the Song

ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕੇ ਬਿਖਈ ਤੁਮ ਤਾਰੇ ਸੁਮਤਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੈ ਪਾਈ ॥
janam janam kay bikh-ee tum taaray sumat sang tumaarai paa-ee.
You save us from the corruption and sins of countless incarnations; associating with You, we obtain sublime understanding.
anik jon bharamtay parabh bisrat saas saas har gaa-ee. ||1||
Forgetting God, we wandered through countless incarnations; with each and every breath, we sing the Lord's Praises. ||1||

In plain words

For a long time I was tangled in things that pulled me down. You reached in and drew me free, and being close to you, my thinking cleared like muddy water going still.

For so long I forgot where I came from, and I wandered, lost. Now every breath I take carries the song of the One — in and out, all of it remembering.

Remembering the One can become as natural as breathing.
The deeper layer

The One pulls us free from old tangles, and then every breath becomes a song.

Bikh-ee means the poison of harmful habits. The verse says we carried them janam janam, through life after life. Sumat means clear, good understanding. It comes from sang, being in the One's company. Think of muddy water in a jar. Leave it still, and it clears.

Saas saas means "breath by breath." Remembering the One stops being a chore. It becomes the rhythm of being alive, as natural as breathing in and out.

A Question to Sit With

What is one thing you do so often it happens without thinking — and could remembering the One become like that?
