The Burning That Cooled

ਸਿਵ ਬਿਰੰਚ ਅਰੁ ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਲੋਕ ਤਾ ਮਹਿ ਜਲਤੌ ਫਿਰਿਆ ॥
siv biranch ar indar lok taa meh jaltou firi-aa.
In the worlds of Shiva, Brahma and Indra, I wandered around, burning up with envy.

Meditating, meditating in remembrance on my Lord and Master, I became cool and calm; my pains, sorrows and doubts are gone. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I chased after high and shining places.

I still went around burning up inside, eaten by envy of what others had.

Then I remembered the One again and again, and I cooled right down.

The aches and the doubts that followed me simply left.

Even the highest place leaves you burning if your heart is not settled.
The deeper layer

Even the highest heavens leave you burning inside, until remembering the One cools you down.

Siv biranch ar indar lok means the worlds of Shiva, Brahma and Indra. In old Indian stories, these are grand, shining heavens. Yet even there, the singer went around jaltou, burning with envy. An unsettled heart burns anywhere. Think of getting the best seat at the party and still feeling jealous of someone else's.

Simar simar bha-ay seetal — by remembering again and again, I became cool. The answer to every burning is a settled heart. The aches, sorrows and doubts simply leave.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever gotten something you wanted and still felt restless? What was missing?
