In plain words

Without the Naam of the One, every flavor is flat.

Sing the sweet praises of the One, and day and night a full sound keeps ringing.

Without the One, even the best things taste flat.
The deeper layer

Without the Name, life loses its flavor. With it, a quiet music plays all the time.

This is the pause line, the rahaa-o, the center of the shabad. Feekay har kay naam bin saad means without the Name, all flavors are flat. Think of your favorite dish cooked with no salt at all. Everything is there, but something is missing. The Name is what gives life its taste.

Amrit ras keertan means the sweet, life-giving taste of keertan, singing the One's praises. Pooran naad means a full, unbroken sound that runs through day and night. It is like music playing softly in the next room that never stops.

A Question to Sit With

Has something fun ever felt empty inside? What do you think was missing?
