In plain words

Ever since I took hold of the shelter of the holy, my mind has lit up.

Peace and an easy calm have come to me, and no pain is left.

The right shelter can light up a mind that was sitting in the dark.
The deeper layer

Since coming to the shelter of the holy, the mind has lit up with calm.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. It tells of a change that has already happened. It is not just a hope. Saadhoo saran gahee — I took hold of the shelter of the holy, the good and wise.

That shelter brought saant, quiet peace, and sahj, an easy, natural calm. It brought pargaasaa, a lighting-up inside. Birthaa kachh na rahee — no pain was left over.

The shelter is not a building. It is staying near the Guru's people and facing the right direction, so the mind can settle. Think of a phone that finally finds a strong WiFi signal. Everything that was stuck and spinning starts to work smoothly.

A Question to Sit With

Where or with whom do you feel your mind go quiet and clear?
