The One Thing I Ask

ਹੋਹੁ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇਹੁ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਬਿਨਤੀ ਏਹ ਕਹੀ ॥
hohu kirpaal naam dayh apunaa bintee ayh kahee.
Please be merciful to me, O Lord, and bless me with Your Name; this is the prayer I offer to You.
ਆਨ ਬਿਉਹਾਰ ਬਿਸਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਪਾਇਓ ਲਾਭੁ ਸਹੀ ॥੧॥
aan bi-uhaar bisray parabh simrat paa-i-o laabh sahee. ||1||
I have forgotten my other occupations; remembering God in meditation, I have obtained the true profit. ||1||

In plain words

Be kind to me and give me Your Naam to carry in my heart. This is the one prayer I offer.

My other busy errands slipped from my mind. Remembering the One, I found the true profit.

Sometimes the one thing worth asking for makes the other wants quietly let go.
The deeper layer

One prayer holds all the others: please give me the Naam.

Hohu kirpaal, naam dayh — be kind, give me the Name. The Name is the living presence of the One, kept in the heart. This one request stands in for all the others.

What about everything else? The other bi-uhaar, the busy jobs and errands, are not called bad. They simply fall away by themselves. That happens once the real laabh, the true profit, is found in simran. Simran means keeping the One in mind.

Think of a child who finally gets a hug from a parent after a long day. The toys and games are not wrong. They just stop mattering so much in that moment.

A Question to Sit With

If you could ask for only one thing and mean it fully, what would it be?
