Sikhism·Raag Soohee·Shabad 1
Verse 3 of 5

Everyone Talks of Wisdom, Yet the World Wanders

ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ਰਵੈ ॥
gi-aan Dhi-aan sabh ko-ee ravai.
Everyone speaks of wisdom and meditation;
ਬਾਂਧਨਿ ਬਾਂਧਿਆ ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਭਵੈ ॥੨॥
baaNDhan baaNDhi-aa sabh jag bhavai. ||2||
but bound in bondage, the whole world is wandering around in confusion. ||2||

In plain words

Everyone can talk about wisdom and stillness. The words are easy to say.

But so much of the world keeps wandering in circles, all tangled up.

Talking about goodness and living it are two different things.
The deeper layer

Talking about goodness is easy. Living it is the hard part.

The verse says: gi-aan Dhi-aan sabh ko-ee ravai — everyone talks about wisdom (gi-aan) and quiet focus on the One (Dhi-aan). Yet the whole world keeps wandering, tied up in knots.

Think of someone who can explain every rule of soccer but never gets on the field. Knowing the rules doesn't make you a player. In the same way, speaking about wisdom doesn't make us wise. The gap the verse points to is between saying and becoming. Wisdom only sets us free when we start to live it.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you know is good but find hard to actually do?
