Speaking the Unspoken

pir raavay rang raat-rhee-ay pir kaa mahal tin paa-i-aa raam.
Ravishing her Husband Lord, she is imbued with His Love; she obtains the Mansion of His Presence.
so saho at nirmal daataa jin vichahu aap gavaa-i-aa raam.
She is utterly immaculate and pure; the Great Giver banishes self-conceit from within her.
vichahu moh chukaa-i-aa jaa har bhaa-i-aa har kaaman man bhaanee.
The Lord drives out attachment from within her, when it pleases Him. The soul bride becomes pleasing to the Lord's Mind.
an-din gun gaavai nit saachay kathay akath kahaanee.
Night and day, she continually sings the Glorious Praises of the True Lord; she speaks the Unspoken Speech.
jug chaaray saachaa ayko vartai bin gur kinai na paa-i-aa.
Throughout the four ages, the One True Lord is permeating and pervading; without the Guru, no one finds Him.
naanak rang ravai rang raatee jin har saytee chit laa-i-aa. ||3||
O Nanak, she revels in joy, imbued with His Love; she focuses her consciousness on the Lord. ||3||

In plain words

Colored in the One's love, a heart delights in its Beloved and finds the mansion of His presence. That Beloved is utterly pure and giving, and washes the small self out from within.

When it pleases the One, clinging is cleared away, and the heart becomes dear to Him.

Day and night it sings the True One's praises and speaks the unspeakable story. Through all the ages the one True One is at work, and without the Teacher no one finds Him. Such a heart revels in joy, colored in His love, having set its attention fully on the One.

The deepest things are beyond words, yet a full heart cannot help trying to sing them.
The deeper layer

This one says the deepest truth is beyond words, and yet a full heart cannot stop trying to say it.

Kathay akath kahaanee means "she tells the akath, the untellable, story." It sounds like a riddle. Think of trying to describe the ocean to someone who has never seen it. You know you cannot really do it, but you are so full of it that you have to try.

So saho at nirmal daataa means the Beloved is completely pure, and a daataa, a giver. Part of the gift is clearing away the aap, self-importance, from inside.

Jug chaaray saachaa ayko vartai means that through all four jugs, the great ages of time, one True One is at work. Life keeps changing, but the One stays the same through all of it.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever felt something so big or beautiful that words could not quite hold it?
