A Mind Turned Only Outward

ਮੁੰਧ ਇਆਣੀ ਮਨਮੁਖੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣਾ ਅੰਙੁ ॥
munDh i-aanee manmukhee fir aavan jaanaa any.
The self-willed manmukh is like the ignorant bride, who comes and goes again and again in reincarnation.
ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਇਓ ਮਨਿ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ਸਹਲੰਙੁ ॥੨॥
har parabh chit na aa-i-o man doojaa bhaa-o sahlanny. ||2||
The Lord God does not come into her consciousness, and her mind is stuck in the love of duality. ||2||

In plain words

A heart that looks only outside forgets the One within. It stays restless, coming and going, always chasing and never arriving.

The One never comes to mind. So the heart gets tangled in loving what glitters and fades.

A heart that looks only outward stays restless; the rest it wants is within.
The deeper layer

A heart that looks only at the outside world stays restless, going around and around.

Mundh iaanee manmukhee — the manmukh is someone who follows only their own mind. Guru Ram Das compares such a person to a young bride who has not yet learned. Fir aavan jaanaa any — she keeps coming and going, again and again. It means being born and leaving the world over and over, never arriving home.

Man doojaa bhaa-o sahlany — the mind is stuck in doojaa bhaa-o, "love of the second." That means holding on to things that shine and change, instead of the One who stays.

Think of chasing one new game after another, and each one feels old in a week. Anyone can fall into this, of any age. The way out is to let the One come into the mind.

A Question to Sit With

When do you feel most restless — and where might that restlessness be pointing?
