I am full of filth, and I practice evil deeds; O Lord, save me, be with me, merge me into Your Being!

gur amrit sar navlaa-i-aa sabh laathay kilvikh pany. ||3||
The Guru has bathed me in the pool of Ambrosial Nectar, and all my dirty sins and mistakes have been washed away. ||3||

In plain words

I come carrying my mistakes. I am not pretending to be spotless. So stay with me, hold me close, make me part of You.

The Guru bathed me in a pool of pure nectar. Everything heavy I was carrying lifted and rinsed away.

You don't have to be spotless to be held — the pool washes what you bring.
The deeper layer

Guru Ram Das says honestly that he has made mistakes, and the Guru washes him clean.

Ham mail bharay duhchaaree-aa — "I am covered in dirt, and I have done wrong." He does not pretend to be perfect. Har raakho angee any — "Keep me close, make me part of You."

Then comes relief. Gur amrit sar navlaa-i-aa — the Guru bathed me in the amrit sar, the pool of nectar. That pool is the gathering of loving people, the sangat, and the Name itself. Sabh laathay kilvikh pany — all the wrongs were washed away.

Think of coming in from a muddy game and stepping into a warm shower. You don't feel ashamed of the mud. You just feel clean. That is the feeling here.

A Question to Sit With

What is something heavy you've been able to set down and let go?
