The Treasure Buried Within

man dah dis chal chal bharmi-aa manmukh bharam bhulaa-i-aa.
The mind runs around in the ten directions; the self-willed manmukh wanders around, deluded by doubt.
nit aasaa man chitvai man tarisnaa bhukh lagaa-i-aa.
In his mind, he continually conjures up hopes; his mind is gripped by hunger and thirst.
antaa Dhan Dhar dabi-aa fir bikh bhaalan ga-i-aa.
There is an infinite treasure buried within the mind, but still, he goes out, searching for poison.
jan naanak naam salaahi too bin naavai pach pach mu-i-aa. ||3||
O servant Nanak, praise the Naam, the Name of the Lord; without the Name, he rots away, and wastes away to death. ||3||

In plain words

Left to itself, the mind runs off in every direction, chasing this and that and getting lost.

It keeps spinning up new wants, always hungry, never quite full.

Yet an endless treasure is buried right inside it — and still it goes looking outside for things that only leave it emptier. So keep the Name close: that is where the treasure actually is.

The endless treasure is buried inside you, not out in the things you chase.
The deeper layer

antaa dhan dhar dabi-aa — an infinite treasure buried within, yet the restless mind goes bikh bhaalan, searching for poison, things that harm rather than nourish. dah dis, the ten directions: the scattered mind. The remedy is turning attention inward to the Name, the treasure already held.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you already have that you sometimes go looking for elsewhere?
