Sikhism·Raag Soohee·Shabad 12
Verse 2 of 5

Cloth the Dye Can't Hold

ਗਿਆਨੀ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥
gi-aanee gur bin bhagat na ho-ee.
O wise ones, without the Guru, there is no devotional worship.
ਕੋਰੈ ਰੰਗੁ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਚੜੈ ਜੇ ਲੋਚੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
korai rang kaday na charhai jay lochai sabh ko-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The untreated cloth does not take up the dye, no matter how much everyone may wish it. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

Real devotion needs the Guru's guidance — you can't force it on your own.

Plain, untreated cloth won't hold color, no matter how badly everyone wants it to.

Wanting love isn't enough; the heart has to be readied to hold it.
The deeper layer

Love for the One needs the Guru, just as dye needs cloth that is ready for it.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line. It is the center of the whole shabad, the idea everything else leans on. Gi-aanee gur bin bhagat na ho-ee — O wise ones, without the Guru there is no bhagat, no loving devotion.

Korai rang kaday na charhai — color never takes on koraa, raw, untreated cloth. Anyone who has tie-dyed a T-shirt knows this. If the cloth isn't washed and prepared first, the color just rinses away. Wishing hard does not change that.

The heart works the same way. The Guru's guidance gets it ready, so the dye of love can set. Soohee is the name of a deep red, the color of a bride's dress, and this raag often talks about being dyed in love. Here that picture is turned around. It shows the cloth that cannot hold the color.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you had to prepare for before it could truly stick?
