Nanak says: when grace opens a person's eyes, they begin to understand. That person holds the Name in their heart.
Through the Guru's kindness, they come to know the One. Knowing the One, they melt right into the One, like a drop returning to water.
Grace opens a person's eyes, and seeing the One leads to becoming one with the One.
Naanak nadar karay so boojhai — says Nanak, the one who receives nadar, the Giver's kind glance of grace, understands. That person then holds the Naam, the Name, in their heart.
Gur parsaadee ayko boojhai aykas maahi samaa-ay — by the Guru's grace they understand the One, and they merge into the One.
Understanding (boojhai) and merging (samaa-ay) are not two separate steps. They are one movement. Think of a raindrop landing in a lake. The moment it truly meets the water, it is already part of the lake. Grace starts the movement, and it ends in the One.
