Verse 2 of 4

Nine Treasures Fill the Home of the Heart

aanandaa vajeh nit vaajay paarbarahm man voothaa raam.
The sounds of ecstasy vibrate through me continuously. I have enshrined the Supreme Lord within my mind.
gurmukhay sach karnee saaree binsay bharam bhai jhoothaa raam.
As Gurmukh, my lifestyle is excellent and true; my false hopes and doubts are dispelled.
anhad banee gurmukh vakhaanee jas sun sun man tan hari-aa.
The Gurmukh chants the Bani of the unstruck melody; hearing it, listening to it, my mind and body are rejuvenated.
sarab sukhaa tis hee ban aa-ay jo parabh apnaa kari-aa.
All pleasures are obtained, by that one whom God makes His Own.
ghar meh nav niDh bharay bhandaaraa raam naam rang laagaa.
Within the home of the heart are the nine treasures, filled to overflowing. He has fallen in love with the Lord's Name.
Servant Nanak shall never forget God; his destiny is perfectly fulfilled. ||2||

In plain words

A joyful music plays in me without stopping, for I have made a home in my heart for the Supreme One.

Turned toward the Teacher, my way of living rings true, and false hopes and doubts fade out.

Hearing the soundless song, my mind and body turn green and alive. Every joy comes to the one the One makes His own.

The nine treasures fill the home of my heart, brimming over. I have fallen in love with the Name, and I will never let the One slip from my mind.

The nine treasures of all wealth are found inside, in a heart in love with the Name.
The deeper layer

This verse says the greatest treasure is already inside, in the home of the heart.

Nav nidh bharay bhandaaraa: the nine treasures fill the storehouse. "The nine treasures" was an old way of saying "all the riches there are." And where are they? Ghar meh, inside the home, the heart's own home. Fullness is found within.

Raam naam rang laagaa: I have fallen in love with the Name. Love, not a sense of duty, is what keeps the One near. It is like practicing a game you love. You don't need anyone to remind you.

Man tan hari-aa: mind and body turn green again. Picture a dry plant after a good watering, standing up fresh and bright.

A Question to Sit With

What fills you up inside so much that you don't feel you're missing anything?
