In plain words

True Guru, give me this gift; You are the Giver who can do anything.

Help me quiet my ego and pride, my wanting, my anger, my showing off.

Burn away my greed and grabbing, and give me the Naam to lean on.

Day and night keep me fresh and new and clean, never dirty again.

Nanak says: this is how I am set free; by Your grace, there is peace.

Ask the Giver for the Naam, and a heart kept fresh finds peace.
The deeper layer

A first-person prayer of the First Mehl. The inner weather to quiet (haumai, pride, wanting, anger, greed) is named as weather to settle, not sins to be shamed for. ahinis navtan nirmalaa = ever-fresh and clean, new day and night. nadar tayree sukh ho-ay = peace comes by grace, received, not earned.

A Question to Sit With

What is one thing you would ask for, if you were asking to become a better version of yourself?
