The Longing to Be Noticed

ਮਃ ੧ ॥
mehlaa 1.
First Mehl:
ਸਭੇ ਕੰਤੈ ਰਤੀਆ ਮੈ ਦੋਹਾਗਣਿ ਕਿਤੁ ॥
sabhay kantai ratee-aa mai dohaagan kit.
All are imbued with love for their Husband Lord; I am a discarded bride - what good am I?
ਮੈ ਤਨਿ ਅਵਗਣ ਏਤੜੇ ਖਸਮੁ ਨ ਫੇਰੇ ਚਿਤੁ ॥੩॥
mai tan avgan -ayt-rhay khasam na fayray chit. ||3||
My body is filled with so many faults; my Lord and Master does not even turn His thoughts to me. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Everyone else is soaked in love for the Beloved; I feel like the bride left out — what use am I?

I carry so many faults that my Master does not even turn a thought my way.

Feeling left out of love is an ache that shows how much the heart wants to be close.
The deeper layer

A shalok of the First Mehl in the voice of someone who feels unworthy and overlooked. mai dohaagan kit = I, the one left out, what am I worth? avgan aytrhay = so many faults. It is the honest ache of a heart that wants to be close, and the bride stands for every soul.

Across the Vaar, grace is the One's gift, never a wage, and the ache itself shows how much the heart wants to come home.

A Question to Sit With

When you feel like the left-out one, what helps you remember you matter?
