If Only One Moment With the One

ਮਃ ੧ ॥
mehlaa 1.
First Mehl:
ਹਉ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਜਿਨਾ ਦੈ ਵਾਤਿ ॥
ha-o balihaaree tin ka-o sifat jinaa dai vaat.
I am a sacrifice to those who praise the Lord with their mouths.
ਸਭਿ ਰਾਤੀ ਸੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਇਕ ਮੈ ਦੋਹਾਗਣਿ ਰਾਤਿ ॥੪॥
sabh raatee sohaaganee ik mai dohaagan raat. ||4||
All the nights are for the happy soul-brides; I am a discarded bride - if only I could have even one night with Him! ||4||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I give my whole self to those whose mouths are full of the One's praise.

Every night belongs to the happy brides; I am the one left out — if only I could have even one night with my Beloved!

Even one moment with the Beloved is worth longing for.
The deeper layer

A shalok of the First Mehl. balihaaree tin ka-o = I give myself to those steeped in praise. sabh raatee sohaaganee, ik mai dohaagan raat = every night is for the happy brides; the one left out longs for even one night, one moment of union, with the Beloved. It is tender yearning, not self-condemnation, and the bride stands for every soul.

A Question to Sit With

Is there something you want so much that the wanting itself feels important?
