Singing, I Come Alive

ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਾ ਜੀਵਾ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਈ ॥
har gun gaavaa jeevaa mayree maa-ee.
Singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, I live, O my mother.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਦਇਆਲਿ ਗੁਣ ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਈ ॥੨॥
satgur da-i-aal gun naam darirhaa-ee. ||2||
The Merciful True Guru implanted the Glorious Praises of the Naam within me. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When I sing the praises of the One, I feel truly alive, mother — like the song itself is my breath.

The kind Guru planted these praises deep inside me, where they grow on their own.

Some things don't just fill your day — they're what make you feel alive.
The deeper layer

Singing about the One makes the poet feel truly alive.

Har gun gaavaa jeevaa mayree maa-ee — singing the One's praises, I live, my mother. Jeevaa means "I live." Praise here is not a chore. It is more like breathing.

Then: the kind Guru planted these praises deep inside. The word darirhaa-ee means planted firmly, set in to stay. Think of a tree planted with deep roots. It keeps growing even when no one is watching. That is how praise works once the Guru plants it. It grows on its own and keeps the heart alive.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that makes you feel most alive when you do it?
