Wake Up, Gently

ਕਿਆ ਤੂ ਸੋਇਆ ਜਾਗੁ ਇਆਨਾ ॥
ki-aa too so-i-aa jaag i-aanaa.
Why are you asleep? Wake up, you ignorant fool!
ਤੈ ਜੀਵਨੁ ਜਗਿ ਸਚੁ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
tai jeevan jag sach kar jaanaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
You believe that your life in the world is true. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

It is easy to drift through our days half-asleep, quietly imagining that everything will always stay exactly as it is right now.

So here is a soft nudge: wake up, dear one. See how alive and precious this moment is. When you really wake to your life, you start to live it fully.

Wake gently to how alive and precious this moment is, and you begin to truly live.
The deeper layer

ki-aa too so-i-aa jaag i-aanaa — why do you sleep? wake, unknowing one. tai jeevan jag sach kar jaanaa — you took worldly life to be permanent (sach). i-aanaa (unknowing) is rendered gently as dear one, and the wake-up is warm, not scolding. This is the Pause/keynote: wake to the preciousness and impermanence of life.

A Question to Sit With

What does it feel like to be fully awake to a moment instead of half-asleep in it?
