Verse 4 of 4

Arrange Your Path While It's Still Light

janam siraano panth na savaaraa.
Your life has passed away, but you have not arranged your path.
saaNjh paree dah dis anDhi-aaraa.
Evening has set in, and soon there will be darkness on all sides.
kahi ravidaas nidaan divaanay.
Says Ravi Daas, O ignorant mad-man,
chaytas naahee dunee-aa fan khaanay. ||3||2||
don't you realize, that this world is the house of death?! ||3||2||

In plain words

The wisest thing we can do is get our path ready while the day is still bright — while we have time, energy, and light to see by.

This world is a beautiful place we pass through, not a place we settle in forever. So we fill it, while we can, with the love and goodness that light our way onward.

Ready your path while the light is good — the world is a place we pass through, not settle in.
The deeper layer

janam siraano panth na savaaraa — life passes, the path unprepared. saanjh paree dah dis andhi-aaraa — evening falls, darkness on all sides (a metaphor for a life not readied). The literal dunee-aa fan khaanay (the world is the house of death) is rendered per the Alaahnian as a place we pass through, not settle in — honest about impermanence, free of dread. divaanay (mad-one) softened.

A Question to Sit With

What is one good thing you could get ready now instead of putting off?
