Holding Loosely, Loving Fully

ਘਰ ਕੀ ਨਾਰਿ ਉਰਹਿ ਤਨ ਲਾਗੀ ॥
ghar kee naar ureh tan laagee.
And the wife of his house, who was so attached to his body and heart,
ਉਹ ਤਉ ਭੂਤੁ ਭੂਤੁ ਕਰਿ ਭਾਗੀ ॥੩॥
uh ta-o bhoot bhoot kar bhaagee. ||3||
runs away, crying out, "Ghost! Ghost!"||3||

In plain words

When we cling to things only for how they look or what they give us right now, they can slip through our fingers and leave us startled.

But love that reaches deeper than the surface doesn't run away when things change. So we practice holding the outside things loosely, and loving what truly lasts fully.

Cling to the surface and it startles you; love what lasts and it stays.
The deeper layer

This one means love that stays on the surface lets go when things change.

ghar kee naar ureh tan laagee — the wife of the house was very attached to his body. Her love was fixed on the outside.

The next line gives a startling picture. Once he is gone, she runs away frightened. Its point is simple. Clinging to the surface does not hold.

Think of liking a friend only for their cool shoes. When the shoes go out of style, the friendship fades too. Love that reaches the heart stays. So we hold outside things loosely, and love what lasts fully.

A Question to Sit With

What is the difference between liking how something looks and truly loving it?
