Verse 5 of 5

Set Free by One Name

ਕਹਿ ਰਵਿਦਾਸ ਸਭੈ ਜਗੁ ਲੂਟਿਆ ॥
kahi ravidaas sabhai jag looti-aa.
Says Ravi Daas, the whole world has been plundered,
ਹਮ ਤਉ ਏਕ ਰਾਮੁ ਕਹਿ ਛੂਟਿਆ ॥੪॥੩॥
ham ta-o ayk raam kahi chhooti-aa. ||4||3||
but I have escaped, chanting the Name of the One Lord. ||4||3||

In plain words

So much of the world gets caught up chasing after things that fade — always grabbing, never quite satisfied.

But there is a way to feel free right in the middle of it all: keep the One in your heart. Holding onto that one true thing, you can hold everything else lightly, and walk through the world with an open, unhurried heart.

Keeping the One in your heart sets you free to hold everything else lightly.
The deeper layer

This one means holding the One sets the heart free.

kahi ravidaas sabhai jag looti-aa — says Ravidaas, the whole world has been robbed. People get caught up chasing things that fade, and they lose their peace.

ham ta-o ayk raam kahi chhooti-aa — but I am set free by calling on the One. Here raam means the One, the Creator of all. It does not point to one hero from the old stories.

Think of a crowded mall at sale time, with everyone grabbing. One person walks through calmly, already happy with what they have. Keeping the One close is what brings that calm.

A Question to Sit With

What is one true thing that, when you hold onto it, lets you relax about the rest?
