Verse 2 of 5

Once You've Tasted the Best

ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਜਨ ਚਾਖਹੁ ਜੇ ਭਾਈ ॥
har ras jan chaakhahu jay bhaa-ee.
If you taste the subtle essence of the Lord, O humble Siblings of Destiny,
ਤਉ ਕਤ ਅਨਤ ਸਾਦਿ ਲੋਭਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ta-o kat anat saad lobhaa-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
then how can you be enticed by other flavors? ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Just taste the sweetness of the One, my friends — really taste it.

After that, how could any other taste pull you away?

Once you've tasted the real thing, the substitutes lose their pull.
The deeper layer

After you've tasted the very best, the other flavors lose their pull.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Har ras jan chaakhahu jay bhaa-ee — friends, if you taste the sweetness of the One...

Ta-o kat anat saad lobhaa-ee — then how could anat saad, other flavors, tempt you? Think of a kid who has had fresh mango from the tree. After that, the mango candy from the store just doesn't taste like much.

One true taste changes what you want. Everything else you wanted finds its proper place behind it.

A Question to Sit With

Has something so good ever made lesser versions stop appealing to you?
