Verse 7 of 7

Cleverness Cannot Free You, Hold the Name

ਚਾਕਰੀਆ ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆ ਅਵਰ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਕਿਤੁ ॥
chaakree-aa chang-aa-ee-aa avar si-aanap kit.
What good does it do to serve, and be good, and be clever?
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਲਿ ਤੂੰ ਬਧਾ ਛੁਟਹਿ ਜਿਤੁ ॥੬॥੧॥੩॥
naanak naam samaal tooN baDhaa chhuteh jit. ||6||1||3||
O Nanak, contemplate the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and you shall be released from bondage. ||6||1||3||

In plain words

Being busy, being nice, being clever — on their own, what do all these really win me?

Hold the Name close instead. That is what quietly loosens the knots and sets a tangled heart free.

Cleverness can't free a tangled heart — remembering the One can.
The deeper layer

chaakree-aa chang-aa-ee-aa avar si-aanap — service, goodness, and cleverness, on their own, achieve little; naanak naam samaal, hold the Name, and baDhaa chhuteh jit, the bound are set free. The turn is from self-effort to the Name.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you feel free when your mind feels tangled up?
