Sikhism·Raag Soohee·Shabad 26
Verse 4 of 5

Pride Misses the Doorway

ਗਰਬਿ ਗਹੇਲੀ ਮਹਲੁ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
garab gahaylee mahal na paavai.
One who is in the grip of pride does not obtain the Mansion of the Lord's Presence.
ਫਿਰਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਵੈ ਜਬ ਰੈਣਿ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ॥
fir pachhutaavai jab rain bihaavai.
She regrets and repents, when her life-night passes away.
ਕਰਮਹੀਣਿ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੩॥
karamheen manmukh dukh paavai. ||3||
The unfortunate self-willed manmukhs suffer in pain. ||3||

In plain words

A heart clenched tight with pride keeps missing the doorway to the One, and later feels the ache of all that missed nearness.

When we insist on going it entirely alone, cut off and self-ruling, we end up carrying more pain than we needed to.

Pride is a locked door; the ache is just the distance it makes.
The deeper layer

Pride keeps us from getting close to the One.

Garab gahaylee mahal na paavai: the one gripped by garab (pride) does not reach the Mansion, the place of closeness to the One. Pride is like a door we hold shut from the inside.

Later, as the night of life passes, that person feels regret. The verse speaks of the manmukh, the one who follows only their own will, and says they dukh paavai, find pain.

This is not a punishment sent from outside. It is cause and effect. When we hold the door shut, the sadness is simply the distance we feel. Ego is a knot to loosen, not a crime. Loosen it, and the door opens.

A Question to Sit With

Can you remember a time pride kept you from something good?
