In plain words

Sometimes I pray as if the One were somewhere far away.

But the One never fades and never leaves — it fills every corner of everything. So I sing, seeing it right here, present all along.

The One we pray toward as far away was never actually absent.
The deeper layer

Sometimes we pray as if the One lives far away.

Bin-o karee jay jaanaa door: I pray, but I think You are far away. That is an honest thing to admit. Many of us talk to the Creator like calling someone in another country.

Then the verse turns. Prabh abhinaasee rahi-aa bharpoor: the One never ends and fills everything. The Guru sings daykh hadoor, having seen the One right here, close by.

The whole shabad fits inside that turn, from far away to right beside you. It is like hunting all over for your glasses and finding them on your head.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever looked hard for something that was near you the whole time?
