Verse 4 of 5

Won by the Beauty of Goodness

ਗੁਣ ਕਾਮਣ ਕਰਿ ਕੰਤੁ ਰੀਝਾਇਆ ॥
gun kaaman kar kant reejhaa-i-aa.
By the charms of virtue, I have enticed and fascinated my Husband Lord.
ਵਸਿ ਕਰਿ ਲੀਨਾ ਗੁਰਿ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਆ ॥
vas kar leenaa gur bharam chukaa-i-aa.
He is under my power - the Guru has dispelled my doubts.
ਸਭ ਤੇ ਊਚਾ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਮੇਰਾ ॥
sabh tay oochaa mandar mayraa.
My mansion is lofty and elevated.
ਸਭ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਤਿਆਗੀ ਪ੍ਰਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੁ ਮੇਰਾ ॥੩॥
sabh kaaman ti-aagee pari-o pareetam mayraa. ||3||
Renouncing all other brides, my Beloved has become my lover. ||3||

In plain words

By living from real goodness, I drew the Beloved close — and the teacher cleared away my doubts.

Now the home of my heart feels tall and bright, and turning away from every lesser love, the One I love is simply mine.

Real goodness is what draws the deepest love close.
The deeper layer

Guru Arjan is saying: goodness itself is what wins the Beloved's heart.

Gun kaaman kar kant reejhaa-i-aa means "using goodness as her charm, she pleased the Beloved." Gun means good qualities. Gur bharam chukaa-i-aa means the Guru ended bharam, the doubt that makes us feel far away.

Then all other loves are set aside. That is not being cold. It is focus. Think of a kid who used to switch hobbies every week and then finds the one they truly love. Everything scattered gets gathered into one deep love. Sabh tay oochaa mandar mayraa means "my home is higher than all." The heart becomes a tall, bright home.

A Question to Sit With

Have you noticed how being genuinely good pulls good things toward you?
