Soohee, Fifth Mehl:
ਉਮਕਿਓ ਹੀਉ ਮਿਲਨ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤਾਈ ॥
umki-o hee-o milan parabh taa-ee.
An intense yearning to meet God has welled up in my heart.
ਖੋਜਤ ਚਰਿਓ ਦੇਖਉ ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਜਾਈ ॥
khojat chari-o daykh-a-u pari-a jaa-ee.
I have gone out searching to find my Beloved Husband Lord.

Hearing news of my Beloved, I have laid out my bed in my home.

Wandering, wandering all around, I came, but I did not even see Him. ||1||

In plain words

A huge longing to meet the One welled up in my heart. I set out searching for the One I love.

I heard the good news that the Beloved was coming, so I made everything ready at home. Yet after wandering all around, I still had not caught sight of the One.

The longing that sends you searching is the beginning of finding.
The deeper layer

This one means a deep longing sends us searching everywhere for the One.

This song is a chhant, a love song in several verses. umki-o hee-o milan parabh taa-ee — a longing to meet the One surged up in my heart. It is like missing someone so much you cannot sit still.

So the seeker goes out looking. She hears news of the Beloved and gets the home ready, like tidying your room before a guest comes. bharam bharam aa-i-o ta-o nadar na paa-ee — after wandering all around, I still did not see the One.

Here the song sets up its surprise. The seeker looks far away for what is already at home. The longing is still good. It is the engine that finally turns the search inward.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you want so much that it pulls at your whole heart?
