Sikhism·Raag Soohee·Shabad 28
Verse 3 of 6

He Is Always Awake

ਏਕਾ ਸੇਜ ਵਿਛੀ ਧਨ ਕੰਤਾ ॥
aykaa sayj vichhee Dhan kantaa.
One bed is spread out for the bride and her Husband Lord.
ਧਨ ਸੂਤੀ ਪਿਰੁ ਸਦ ਜਾਗੰਤਾ ॥
Dhan sootee pir sad jaagantaa.
The bride is asleep, while her Husband Lord is always awake.
ਪੀਓ ਮਦਰੋ ਧਨ ਮਤਵੰਤਾ ॥
pee-o madro Dhan matvantaa.
The bride is intoxicated, as if she has drunk wine.
ਧਨ ਜਾਗੈ ਜੇ ਪਿਰੁ ਬੋਲੰਤਾ ॥੨॥
Dhan jaagai jay pir bolantaa. ||2||
The soul-bride only awakens when her Husband Lord calls to her. ||2||

In plain words

The heart and the One share one home — but so often the heart is dozing while the One is always wide awake.

The heart can get lost in a happy daze, as if it had drifted off, and it only truly wakes when the Beloved calls its name.

The One is always awake; we are the ones who keep dozing off.
The deeper layer

This one means the One is always awake, even when our hearts are dozing.

aykaa sayj vichhee Dhan kantaa — one bed is spread for the bride and her Beloved. They share one home. The bride stands for the heart.

Dhan sootee pir sad jaagantaa — the bride sleeps, but the Beloved is always awake. The next line says she is dazed, like someone who is not thinking clearly. It is a picture of being distracted, not of real drink. Think of scrolling a phone for an hour and missing a friend who is trying to talk to you.

Dhan jaagai jay pir bolantaa — she wakes when the Beloved calls. Being called is what wakes us. The One makes the first move.

A Question to Sit With

What tends to lull you into 'sleepwalking' through your day?
