Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

How did you come to know the One you love so deeply?

Dear friend, please teach me — show me the way you found.

It is wise and brave to ask someone further along to teach you.
The deeper layer

One friend asks another, "How did you find the One you love? Please teach me."

The shabad opens like a talk between two close friends. One of them has already found the Beloved. The other asks, laalan raavi-aa kavan gatee ree — how did you come to be with your Dear One?

Then comes the humble request: sakhee bataavhu mujheh matee ree. Sakhee means a close friend, a sister of the heart. Matee is wisdom. "Friend, teach me the way." It's like asking an older cousin how they learned to swim. You go to someone who has walked the path ahead of you.

The whole poem is a lesson passed along like that, from one heart to another.

A Question to Sit With

Who is someone a little ahead of you that you could ask to teach you something?
