Sikhism·Raag Soohee·Shabad 35
Verse 3 of 5

The Word That Brings Peace

ਜਾ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਨਤ ਸੁਖ ਸਾਰੇ ॥
jaa kaa sabad sunat sukh saaray.
Hearing the Word of His Shabad, I am totally at peace.
ਜਾ ਕੀ ਟਹਲ ਜਮਦੂਤ ਬਿਦਾਰੇ ॥੨॥
jaa kee tahal jamdoot bidaaray. ||2||
When I serve Him, the Messenger of Death is chased away. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When I hear the true Word, a deep peace settles over me,

and the old fears that used to haunt me simply lose their grip.

In the presence of what is true, old fears lose their grip.
The deeper layer

jaa kaa sabad sunat sukh saaray — the Shabad heard brings sukh, peace. jaa kee tahal jamdoot bidaaray — literally the Messenger of Death is chased off; rendered for young readers as fear itself dissolving. What frightened us loses its power in the presence of the true Word.

A Question to Sit With

What helps your fears feel smaller when they show up?
