Verse 1 of 5

The Glory That Vanishes

ਸੂਹੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
soohee mehlaa 5.
Soohee, Fifth Mehl:
ਕਵਨ ਕਾਜ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
kavan kaaj maa-i-aa vadi-aa-ee.
What is the use of the glory of Maya?
ਜਾ ਕਉ ਬਿਨਸਤ ਬਾਰ ਨ ਕਾਈ ॥੧॥
jaa ka-o binsat baar na kaa-ee. ||1||
It disappears in no time at all. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

What is the real use of the shiny importance the world hands out?

It can disappear in the blink of an eye.

The shine the world hands out can vanish in a blink.
The deeper layer

This one means the shiny importance the world hands out can disappear in a moment.

kavan kaaj maa-i-aa vadi-aa-ee — what use is the glory of maa-i-aa? Maa-i-aa means the world's pull, the things that dazzle and pass. Vadi-aa-ee means glory or importance.

jaa ka-o binsat baar na kaa-ee — it vanishes in no time at all.

Think of a video that everyone watches for one day. By next week, no one remembers it. The verse is not scolding us. It invites us to give our hearts to what does not fade.

A Question to Sit With

What is something everyone says is important that might matter less than it seems?
