A Dream the Sleeper Doesn't Know

ਇਹੁ ਸੁਪਨਾ ਸੋਵਤ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨੈ ॥
ih supnaa sovat nahee jaanai.
This is a dream, but the sleeper does not know it.
ਅਚੇਤ ਬਿਵਸਥਾ ਮਹਿ ਲਪਟਾਨੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
achayt bivasthaa meh laptaanai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
In his unconscious state, he clings to it. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

So much of chasing after that shine is like a dream — and the dreamer does not realize they are dreaming.

Half-asleep, they keep clinging to the pictures in the dream as if they were solid.

The trick of a dream is that you do not know you are in it.
The deeper layer

This one means we can be caught in a dream and not know we are dreaming.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad.

ih supnaa sovat nahee jaanai — this is a dream, but the sleeper does not know it. Supnaa means dream. Chasing the world's shine is like that. It feels solid while we are inside it.

achayt bivasthaa meh laptaanai — half asleep, a person keeps clinging to it. Think of a dream where you win a huge prize. You hold it tight. Then you wake up, and your hands are empty. The good news is that waking up is possible. The shabad is a gentle nudge.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever been so absorbed in something that it felt more real than it was?
