Watching It All Slip By

ਮਹਾ ਮੋਹਿ ਮੋਹਿਓ ਗਾਵਾਰਾ ॥
mahaa mohi mohi-o gaavaaraa.
The poor fool is enticed by the great attachments of the world.
ਪੇਖਤ ਪੇਖਤ ਊਠਿ ਸਿਧਾਰਾ ॥੨॥
paykhat paykhat ooth siDhaaraa. ||2||
Gazing upon them, watching them, he must still arise and depart. ||2||

In plain words

It is easy to get swept up in big, dazzling things we hold on to.

Then, even while we are still gazing at them, our own time quietly runs out.

While we stare at the dazzling things, our own time keeps moving.
The deeper layer

This one means we can be so busy staring at shiny things that our time slips by.

mahaa mohi mohi-o gaavaaraa — the unaware one is caught by great moh. Moh means attachment, holding on too tight. Gaavaaraa here means someone who has not noticed yet. It is not a word for calling names.

paykhat paykhat ooth siDhaaraa — while still watching, one must get up and go.

Think of watching fireworks. You keep looking up, and suddenly the show is over and it is time to go home. The line is tender, not harsh. It says: notice now, while you still can.

A Question to Sit With

What would you do differently if you really felt your time was precious?
