In plain words

Listening again and again to the sweet Name, I hold it in my heart.

Through every hour of the day, I sing the good qualities of the One.

What you truly love, you can carry with you through the whole day.
The deeper layer

Guru Arjan is saying: I listen to the Name, and I sing all day long.

Sun sun amrit naam Dhi-aavaa means "hearing and hearing the sweet Name, I hold it in mind." Amrit is the nectar of life. Listening comes first. Japji Sahib calls this Suniai, deep listening. It feeds the remembering.

Aath pahar tayray gun gaavaa means "all eight watches I sing Your praise." In the old way of keeping time, a day had eight pahar, or watches. So this means all day and all night. It is like a favorite song you hum while you walk, cook and do homework. The joy is woven into ordinary time, not saved for special days.

A Question to Sit With

What is a song or thought you find yourself humming all day long?
