Sikhism·Raag Soohee·Shabad 42
Verse 4 of 6

A Painted Jar Is Still Just A Jar

ਰਖਹਿ ਪੋਚਾਰਿ ਮਾਟੀ ਕਾ ਭਾਂਡਾ ॥
rakheh pochaar maatee kaa bhaaNdaa.
You may clean and decorate the vessel of clay,
ਅਤਿ ਕੁਚੀਲ ਮਿਲੈ ਜਮ ਡਾਂਡਾ ॥੩॥
at kucheel milai jam daaNdaa. ||3||
but it is so very filthy; it shall receive its punishment from the Messenger of Death. ||3||

In plain words

You scrub and decorate a pot made of clay.

But inside it is still very dirty, and one day it will have to answer for that.

Decorating the outside never replaces cleaning the inside.
The deeper layer

This verse says that shining up the outside cannot make the inside clean.

Rakheh pochaar maatee kaa bhaandaa: you polish and decorate a pot made of maatee, clay. The pot is a picture of the body, and of how we look to others.

The verse goes on to say the pot is still dirty inside, and that it will have to answer for it in the end. The lesson in that is simple. Outer polish cannot take the place of a clean heart.

Think of a lunchbox with fancy stickers on the outside but last week's sandwich still inside. Nobody wants to open that! Being honest and caring on the inside is what really counts.

A Question to Sit With

When is it tempting to make something look good rather than actually be good?
