I am a stone, sinking down - please, rescue me! ||5||14||20||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Hear my simple prayer: I feel heavy, like a stone that has slipped underwater.

Reach down and lift me, and I will rise — I trust that the One never leaves anyone at the bottom.

Even a stone can be lifted; no one is left at the bottom.
The deeper layer

This verse is a short, honest prayer: I am sinking, please lift me.

Naanak kee ardaas suneejai: hear Nanak's ardaas, his prayer. The word ardaas is still used for the prayer Sikhs say together.

Doobat paahan prabh mayray leejai: I am a paahan, a stone, going under, my God, please lift me out. A stone cannot swim on its own. It needs a hand to pick it up.

Think of a heavy day, when you feel like you can't get up by yourself. Asking for help is not weak. The prayer trusts that the One hears it, and that a hand reaches down.

A Question to Sit With

Who do you reach out to when you feel too heavy to lift yourself?
