In plain words

Listen, friend — here is how you make it across the wide, churning waters of life.

Find the company of good people, and let the Name of the One be on your lips together.

You cross the hard waters in good company, not alone.
The deeper layer

This verse tells a friend how to get across the wide, rough waters of life.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line. It is the center of the shabad.

Sun saajan i-o dutar taree-ai: listen, friend, this is how the dutar, the hard-to-cross ocean, is crossed. Saajan means a dear friend. The Guru speaks warmly, like a friend sharing a secret.

Mil saadhoo har naam uchree-ai: meet the saadhoo, the good and holy, and speak the Name together.

Think of swimming across a lake. Alone, it feels far. With a group of strong swimmers beside you, singing and cheering, you make it.

A Question to Sit With

Who is a friend you would want beside you when things get hard?
