The Breath That Brings Me to Life

ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਜੀਵਾ ਨਾਰਾਇਣ ॥
simar simar jeevaa naaraa-in.
Remembering, remembering the Lord in meditation, I live.
dookh rog sog sabh binsay gur pooray mil paap tajaa-in. ||1|| rahaa-o.
All pain, disease and suffering is dispelled, meeting the Perfect Guru; sin has been eradicated. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

When I remember the One again and again, I feel truly alive. It is like taking a deep breath after being underwater.

When I meet the perfect teaching, the aches and worries I carry loosen and lift. The weight I was holding is set down.

Remembering the One is what makes me feel truly alive.
The deeper layer

This one means that remembering the One is what makes me feel truly alive.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line. It is the center of the shabad, the part everything else turns around.

simar simar jeevaa naaraa-in — remembering the One again and again, I live. Remembering is not a chore added on top of life. It is what living really means.

Then comes the gift. Dookh rog sog means pain, sickness and sorrow. On meeting the gur pooray, the perfect Guru, they binsay. That means they melt away. Think of a heavy school bag you have carried all day. At last you set it down, and your shoulders feel light.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that makes you feel wide awake and fully alive?
