Sikhism·Raag Soohee·Shabad 56
Verse 3 of 5

The Real Point of Being Alive

ਜੀਵਨ ਪਦਵੀ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਉ ॥
jeevan padvee har kaa naa-o.
The immortal status is obtained through the Name of the Lord;
ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਸੁਆਉ ॥੨॥
man tan nirmal saach su-aa-o. ||2||
the mind and body become spotless and pure, which is the true purpose of life. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The Name gives a kind of life that does not wear out.

When I hold it, my mind and body feel clean and clear — and I understand that this is what being alive was really for.

A clear heart is the real purpose of being alive.
The deeper layer

This one means the Name gives a life that does not wear out.

jeevan padvee har kaa naa-o — the Name of the One is jeevan padvee, the rank of real life. It is the kind of life that lasts.

man tan nirmal saach su-aa-o — mind and body become nirmal, spotless and clear. That is the saach su-aa-o, the true aim of life.

So the verse quietly gives success a new meaning. Think of a phone packed with apps you never open. It is full, but it is not useful. Success is a clear heart, more than a full shelf. That is what we were made for.

A Question to Sit With

What do you think you are really here to do?
