Sikhism·Raag Soohee·Shabad 6
Verse 4 of 5

A Breath Without Remembrance Slips Away

ਤੈਸੋ ਜੈਸਾ ਕਾਢੀਐ ਜੈਸੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
taiso jaisaa kaadhee-ai jaisee kaar kamaa-ay.
According to the actions the mortal commits, so is he proclaimed.
ਜੋ ਦਮੁ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਸੋ ਦਮੁ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਾਇ ॥੩॥
jo dam chit na aavee so dam birthaa jaa-ay. ||3||
And that breath which is drawn without thinking of the Lord, that breath goes in vain. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

You come to be known by what you actually do, day after day.

And a breath that passes without a single thought of the One just slips away, unused. Each breath is a small chance to remember.

Every breath is a small chance to remember the One.
The deeper layer

taiso jaisaa kaadhee-ai — you are known by what you do; and jo dam chit na aavee so dam birthaa jaa-ay, a breath drawn without a thought of the One passes in vain. Each breath is framed as a small opportunity for remembrance.

A Question to Sit With

Can you take one slow breath right now and hold something you're grateful for?
