Sikhism·Raag Soohee·Shabad 64
Verse 2 of 5

Glad to Serve

ਕੇਸਾ ਕਾ ਕਰਿ ਬੀਜਨਾ ਸੰਤ ਚਉਰੁ ਢੁਲਾਵਉ ॥
kaysaa kaa kar beejnaa sant cha-ur dhulaava-o.
I make my hair into a fan, and wave it over the Saint.
ਸੀਸੁ ਨਿਹਾਰਉ ਚਰਣ ਤਲਿ ਧੂਰਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਲਾਵਉ ॥੧॥
sees nihaara-o charan tal Dhoor mukh laava-o. ||1||
I bow my head low, to touch his feet, and apply his dust to my face. ||1||

In plain words

I would gladly do the smallest, humblest things for someone truly good — anything to be near their goodness.

I bow low, honoring the ground they walk on, happy just to be close.

Gladly doing small things for the good is its own reward.
The deeper layer

This verse shows how glad a heart can be to serve someone truly good.

Kaysaa kaa kar beejnaa sant cha-ur dhulaava-o: I make my own hair into a fan and wave it over the holy one. A cha-ur is the whisk that is waved over something honored, like the Guru Granth Sahib today.

Sees nihaara-o charan tal dhoor mukh laava-o: I bow my head to their feet and touch the dust of their path to my face.

These are big, over-the-top pictures on purpose. They show service that is glad and forgets itself. Think of a young fan who gets to carry the water bottles for a team they love. It isn't a chore. It is an honor, and they'd do it all day.

A Question to Sit With

What is a small, humble thing you could do for someone you admire?
