Sweet Words and a Soft Heart

ਮਿਸਟ ਬਚਨ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਉ ਦੀਨ ਕੀ ਨਿਆਈ ॥
misat bachan bayntee kara-o deen kee ni-aa-ee.
I offer my prayer with sweet words, in sincere humility.
ਤਜਿ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ਸਰਣੀ ਪਰਉ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਨਿਧਿ ਪਾਈ ॥੨॥
taj abhimaan sarnee para-o har gun niDh paa-ee. ||2||
Renouncing egotism, I enter His Sanctuary. I have found the Lord, the treasure of virtue. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I speak gently and kindly, asking with a soft and honest heart.

Setting aside the need to feel bigger than others, I come close — and there I find a treasure of goodness.

Letting go of pride is the door to a real treasure.
The deeper layer

This verse says humility is the door to a treasure.

Misat bachan bayntee kara-o deen kee ni-aa-ee: I pray with sweet words, like a humble person. Taj abhimaan sarnee para-o: letting go of pride, I come into the One's shelter. Abhimaan means pride, the need to feel bigger than others.

Har gun nidh paa-ee: I found the treasure of all good qualities.

Think of a door with a very low frame. You can only walk through if you bend down. Stand tall and stiff, and you bump your head. Bend a little, and a whole room of treasure opens up.

A Question to Sit With

When has speaking gently worked better than trying to win?
