Verse 4 of 5

Looking Again and Again

ਅਵਲੋਕਨ ਪੁਨਹ ਪੁਨਹ ਕਰਉ ਜਨ ਕਾ ਦਰਸਾਰੁ ॥
avlokan punah punah kara-o jan kaa darsaar.
I gaze upon the Blessed Vision of the Lord's humble servant, again and again.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਚਨ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਸਿੰਚਉ ਬੰਦਉ ਬਾਰ ਬਾਰ ॥੩॥
amrit bachan man meh sincha-o banda-o baar baar. ||3||
I cherish and gather in His Ambrosial Words within my mind; time and time again, I bow to Him. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I keep looking at the goodness in good people, again and again, the way you return to a favorite view.

I gather their kind words into my heart and hold onto them, treasuring each one.

Return again and again to the good, the way you return to a favorite view.
The deeper layer

This verse is about returning again and again to goodness, the way you go back to a favorite view.

Avlokan punah punah kara-o jan kaa darsaar: again and again I gaze at the humble servant of the One. Darsaar means the sight of someone you love and honor.

Amrit bachan man meh sincha-o: I water my mind with their nectar-sweet words. Amrit means nectar, something sweet that gives life. Banda-o baar baar: I bow, time and time again.

Think of a garden. You don't water it once and walk away. You come back every day, and slowly it grows. Coming back again and again is itself a kind of love.

A Question to Sit With

What kind words has someone said that you still hold onto?
