In plain words

In my heart I wish and hope and ask for one thing: to be among good people.

Be kind to me, One, and keep me close to those who walk in goodness.

The company of good people is a thing worth hoping for.
The deeper layer

This verse ends the shabad with one simple wish: to be near good people.

Chitva-o man aasaa kara-o jan kaa sang maaga-o: in my mind I wish and hope, and I ask for the company of the One's people. Sang means company, being together.

Daas charnee laaga-o: place me at the feet of Your servants. Daas means servant. This is a picture of humility, not of being small. Guru Arjan, the fifth Guru, is asking to learn from those who serve.

Think of how you pick up the words and habits of your closest friends. The people we stay near shape who we become. So the whole shabad comes back to a single wish: to stay near goodness.

A Question to Sit With

What is a kind of company you would most like to be part of?
