Beyond Any Picture

ਬਰਨੁ ਚਿਹਨੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਮੁਖੁ ਨ ਮਾਸਾਰਾ ॥
baran chihan naahee mukh na maasaaraa.
He has no color, no sign, no mouth and no beard.
ਕਹਨੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਖੇਲੁ ਤੁਹਾਰਾ ॥
kahan na jaa-ee khayl tuhaaraa.
I cannot describe Your play.
ਨਾਨਕ ਰੇਣ ਸੰਤ ਚਰਨਾਰਾ ॥੨॥੨॥੪੫॥
naanak rayn sant charnaaraa. ||2||2||45||
Nanak is the dust of the feet of the Saints. ||2||2||45||

In plain words

The One has no particular color or shape, no single face you could draw.

I cannot really describe this great play — I can only marvel at it, and stay close to good people.

Some things you cannot fully describe — you can only marvel.
The deeper layer

The One has no shape we could draw, yet the whole show comes from the One.

Baran chihan naahee mukh na maasaaraa — no color, no mark, no mouth, no beard. You can't draw a picture of the One. Kahan na jaa-ee khayl tuhaaraa — Your play can't be put into words.

Think of trying to describe the wind. You see the leaves move and feel it on your face, but you can't draw the wind itself. The poet ends humbly: naanak rayn sant charnaaraa — Nanak is the dust of the feet of the saints. That means staying low, and close to good people. The One without form stands behind the stage of endless forms.

A Question to Sit With

What is something so amazing that words cannot quite capture it?
