Raag Soohee, Shabad 77 - Heaven Is Wherever the Song Is Sung

ਮੁਕਤਿ ਭੁਗਤਿ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂੰ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਾਇਹਿ ॥
mukat bhugat jugat tayree sayvaa jis tooN aap karaa-ihi.
Liberation, comfort and proper lifestyle come from serving You; You alone cause us to serve You.
ਤਹਾ ਬੈਕੁੰਠੁ ਜਹ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਤੂੰ ਆਪੇ ਸਰਧਾ ਲਾਇਹਿ ॥੨॥
tahaa baikunth jah keertan tayraa tooN aapay sarDhaa laa-ihi. ||2||
That place is heaven, where the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises are sung. You Yourself instill faith into us. ||2||

In plain words

Real freedom, real comfort, a good way to live - all of it grows from serving the One, and even the serving is something You awaken in me.

And heaven is not a faraway place. Heaven is anywhere the One's praises are being sung - right here, whenever the song rises.

Heaven is not far away; it is wherever the song rises.
The deeper layer

Everything good grows from serving the One, and heaven is wherever the One is praised.

Mukat bhugat jugat tayree sayvaa — freedom, comfort, and a good way to live all come from seva, serving the One. And even the wish to serve is something the One wakes up in us.

Then comes a surprise. Tahaa baikunth jah keertan tayraa — heaven is right there, where Your praises are sung. Baikunth means heaven. Keertan means singing the One's praises together. So heaven is not a faraway place above the clouds. It is here and now, wherever the song rises.

Think of a kitchen on a holiday, full of family and laughter. That warm feeling fills whatever room it is in. Heaven is like that.

Too aapay sarDhaa laa-ihi — You Yourself plant sarDhaa in us. SarDhaa means heartfelt love and trust.

A Question to Sit With

Where does it feel like heaven to you - where is the song being sung?
