Raag Soohee, Shabad 77 - Remembering, I Come Alive

ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜੀਵਾ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਹਾਲਾ ॥
simar simar simar naam jeevaa tan man ho-ay nihaalaa.
Meditating, meditating, meditating in remembrance on the Naam, I live; my mind and body are enraptured.
charan kamal tayray Dho-ay Dho-ay peevaa mayray satgur deen da-i-aalaa. ||3||
I wash Your Lotus Feet, and drink in this water, O my True Guru, O Merciful to the meek. ||3||

In plain words

When I hold the Name close again and again, I come alive - my whole self, mind and body, lights up with joy.

I bow so low I would drink the water off Your feet; that is how tender the One is to the small and the lowly.

Holding the Name close, I come fully alive.
The deeper layer

Remembering the One, again and again, makes me truly come alive.

Simar simar simar naam jeevaa — remembering, remembering, remembering the Name, I live. The word comes three times, like a heartbeat. Naam, the Name, means the One's presence held in mind. Tan man ho-ay nihaalaa — body and mind light up with delight.

Charan kamal tayray Dho-ay Dho-ay peevaa — I wash Your lotus feet and drink that water. It is a picture of the deepest, humblest love. Think of a small child hugging a parent's legs at the door, not caring about anything else.

Deen da-i-aalaa — the One is kind to the deen, the small and the lowly. That tenderness is why the singer bows so low.

A Question to Sit With

What makes you feel truly, fully alive?
